i've been here for hours
the sun is high now and my jacket's off
skin to sky
the rays of light enter through the lids of my eyes
and there's a certain beauty in that
i want to absorb the sun's wisdom
it's years of knowledge in these few hours of bliss
a man talks on his phone
like he's losing the fight of his life and he knows
the water flows soft against the city's atmosphere
a break in what seems to be a hard life
birds settle in the ripples
creating new ones as they land
i wish that my body could float soft above the waves
i often sink trying
i tap to the beat in the air
the one that comes from footsteps, traffic, and sounding horns
people walk past but their minds are running
the train passes every so often
people wait
and they wait impatiently like they can't spare the time to stop and just breathe
why can't we just breathe
Blog about the piece:
I remember doing this writing in San Diego, California. I had driven the 6 hours it takes to get there from Tucson, AZ and was so excited to be on my own in a place unknown to me. I got up that morning, parked someplace downtown and just started walking. I remember passing by stores just beginning to open and by a farmer's market tucked down one of the streets: I had no idea where I was going and it honestly didn't matter. I ended up at a park quite a ways from my truck. I can not remember the name but it was a lovely piece of nature in the downtown area. I sat there for hours. I wrote and I watched and for a moment in my life I didn't need to be anywhere but there. It is a marvelous thing to sit back and just observe. The world spun and life spilled open while I just sat, seeing things in a different light. Maybe for a moment, wherever you may find yourself today, just stop and observe what's around you. Without judging, see life in all it's beauty and raw existence.
