give me a little piece of corporate america
i'll mold it into art
you can see the beauty in the lines that they give you
but wait until i pull it apart
I spent a year of my life commuting back and forth to the capital of Corporate America, everyday feeling like I was just another mammal in the rat race. I'd wake up at 5am; drive to the train station; RUN to catch my 6:14 train -- most of the time missing it and having to wait in the cold or the rain or the hundred degree heat index for the next one; into Union Station, I'd follow the herds into the subway station to catch my red line; two transfers later and a fifteen minute walk into the nine to five job that had great benefits and a good 401(K). It took me two weeks to realize the money wasn't worth it -- that I didn't fit in with all the suits and high-heels (and that i never would) -- and, that life is too short to spend the majority of it commuting. A year later I left Corporate America behind. I will never go back.
I wish I could say that I left Corporate America to make ART. Instead, I went back to school to divert into the healthcare industry. Trading a suit for scrubs, I'm beginning to wonder if it's all the same. Do we trade in our individualism for salary and good benefits?
You're only trading in your individualism if you are not doing something you are passionate about. You have a gift, a passion, a talent, make a career out of it :)
